KS2 - Exploring The Planets

This special space day for KS2 is designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum science space topic in an exciting and engaging way.

An alternative to most space visits which offer just a 30 minute show, your pupils can spend the entire day immersed in a range of exciting space activities guided by an expert, exploring the stars and planets, meteorites space travel and more...

Space Workshops

There are different elements that can be combined in different ways to make a fantastic space day. We will work with you to optimise the content to make the visit memorable, exciting and educational, and relevant to your curriculum aims.

The number of topics, from those listed below, that can be delivered in a one-day visit depends on timetables, number of pupils etc. Normally, we can include all of the topics below, although occasionally this may not be possible depending on numbers, timetabling etc.

What teachers say...

"Wonderful - an amazing experience for the pupils! They were talking about it for days afterwards..."

“Mike really brought space alive for the children, with a well thought out and appropriate narrative the children could access. Highly recommended!”

"A fantastic day for the children...."

Exploring the Solar System

Groups of pupils each undertake their own 'space mission' to one of the planets, carrying out experiments and more (all in the safety of your classroom!). They also find out about the excitement and challenges of space exploration.

Designed to increase engagement by allowing pupils choices about what and how to explore, this exciting session teaches about the planets through the simulation of designing and running a mission from a space station to the Moon or a planet of our Solar System.

Pupils will naturally absorb key curriculum learning objectives through the activities they undertake - for instance finding out about the layout and orbits of the planets whilst planning their probes path to them...

During the session, groups of pupils rotate around learning stations in the classroom. They will explore many of the aspects of living and working in space that astronauts are trained in.

At the end of the session they feed back their findings to the rest of the class. This means that each planet can be highlighted.

The session allows us to cover not only 'Earth and Space' from the curriculum, but also other aspects including 'Forces'.

The Stars and Planets

A scene-setting exploration of the Universe starting with the stars and planets and moving out into the Universe with stars, galaxies and black holes. Involving the children through Q and A we can bring the wonders of the Universe to life for your pupils.

We also explore the movements of the Moon and planets, and place these in the context of the stars, planets and constellations that pupils can see for themselves at the time of the visit to enable them to follow up at home and see things for themselves in the real skies from their back gardens.

This can be run in various ways, from an in-class interactive session to a 'large screen' presentation if a suitable space is available in the school.

Meteorites

A fascinating and absorbing topics.

Starting by looking at the craters of the Moon (and creating our own small craters in- class as we do so!...) your pupils will handle and examine real meteorites, with not only impressive specimens but also scientifically important ones, learn where they come from and what they are.

They will also find out about shooting stars and even how they could find their own micro-meteorites!

The Space Race and Space Travel Module

A great session that explores the fascinating history of space travel, including the Space Race and the Moon landings and bring it up to date with modern space exploration and life on the International Space Station.

This includes genuine artefacts from the history of space travel for pupils to examine.

A Space-Age Life

Learning with a difference with this exciting session that looks at life and childhood in the space age, through original toys and games with the space theme that was very popular during the space race.

As well as being really enjoyable, interactive and memorable, this session includes both substantial science and even an optional PSHE learning element...
